Primary Education (4–12 years)

Is your child under 4 years old?

If your child is not yet 4 years old and you would like information about registering for primary school, please note that the municipality of Amstelveen has a central admission policy for all children born on or after 1 September 2020. Information about registration procedures can be found on the dedicated admissions website.

If your child is already 4 years old when you arrive in Amstelveen, the Central Information Desk (CIL) can help you find a suitable primary school near your home.

Children aged 4–6

Children aged 4 to almost 6 years old generally start in a kindergarten class (groep 1 or 2) at a regular Dutch primary school. The CIL can inform you about schools in your neighbourhood and their current availability. Parents can then contact the school directly to arrange a visit, introductory meeting, and enrolment.

For children approaching the age of 6, placement is considered individually. Together with parents, we look at the child's educational background, language development, and social-emotional needs to determine the most suitable educational setting.

Children aged 6–12

Children aged 6 to 12 who do not yet have sufficient Dutch language skills usually start at a language school before moving on to mainstream primary education. After approximately one year, most children are ready to transfer to a regular primary school in Amstelveen.

The CIL supports families throughout this process by:

  • arranging placement at a language school; and
  • assisting with the transition to a regular primary school.

Amsteltaal is the language school for Amstelveen and has two locations: Noord and Zuid. Applications are always arranged through the CIL. Whenever possible, children are placed at the location closest to their home.

For children approaching the age of 12, we carefully assess the most suitable educational pathway. Depending on the child's educational background, Dutch language proficiency, and social-emotional development, placement at Amsteltaal (group 7 or 8) or at the ISK (International Transition Class) may be recommended.

Before- and After-School Care

Before- and after-school care is available through childcare providers in Amstelveen. If you would like to make use of these services, please contact a provider in your area directly for information about availability, fees, and registration procedures.

Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for government childcare benefits.
